Beth Street
A stroll down my writing life
A stroll down my writing life
I began writing when I was seven and continue to do so even though I’ve crossed the midlife mark of my writing life.
Beth Street is my stroll along that life, my way to thank the work that has shaped and sustained me all these years.
The street is paved with writing projects. Like buildings, some projects stand tall, while others are nothing but a sloppy heap. And, of course, there are those in arrested decay. I may never know their fate, but I want to acknowledge them just the same.
I have read that there are 150,000-plus words in the English language. All these from just 26 letters. To arrange and rearrange them is to play a never-ending game of Scrabble. I’m so grateful to have had an opportunity to do so. Writing has given my life purpose — whatever that may be.
One other thing:
As you stroll along Beth Street, you’ll also meet some squatters: Siggy Freud, Hotty Flasher, love-sick enemas, cranky cats and dozens of other figments of my fractured imagination. They appeared out of nowhere one day and have no intention of leaving. And while I can’t control their behavior, I’m letting them live rent-free. They make me happy.
